Seven Coloured Earth - Chamarel - Mauritius

While planning a four days tour to the trendiest destination of Mauritius in Africa, a thought kept hovering over our mind that the worthiness of our expedition would certainly be questioned, if we will return without visiting the Chamarel Plain of the Riviere Noire District in south western Mauritius. We, therefore decided to pay homage to the Land of Seven Hues also, and our search for the top flights to Africa began. This famous tourist attraction in Mauritius is a somewhat small area of land, comprising of sand dunes with differentially coloured layers that never erode in spite of the pouring tropical rains.

A drive amid the lush green sugarcane plantation and the subsequent coffee plantation, lead us to seven coloured earth of Mauritius but as we were moving ahead we were least aware of another excitement that awaited us on the way i.e the Waterfall of Chamarel that came few kilometres before the Chamarel Plains. It was like an icing on the much awaited seven layered cake that was on our hit list. After a mandatory photo shoot with the cascading water at the backdrop we marvelled for a few minutes at the breathtaking serenity and beauty of the waterfalls and then headed towards our destination without further delay. Within no time we landed on the earth of seven colours and it was indeed a delight to witness such an astounding sight which kept us stupefied for long.

As we held the clay with different colours in our hands, the view seemed so magical, as different hues sparkled under the gazing sun. All credit goes to the Basalt rock which was weather-beaten over the years to produce this spectacular sight for us to see. The different colours ranging from yellow, green, brown, black, white etc were perceived differently by our group members according to the alignment of rods and cones in their respective brains. After spending a little more time, proving the precision of our analysis related to the exact names of the colours, we left the place with fond memories that are still fresh as dew in my mind, as i am penning down the details from the journey.
